Day 93 – Boys to Men

There are certain things I was very specific about when raising my three boys. Respect for others, especially women was on the top of that list. I would randomly talk to them about what I thought being a real man is. Obviously I had Vinny there to help me for many of the years as my boys matured. But I was never shy to give them a woman’s perspective. I am proud to say that my boys have (and are still) maturing to be respectful, responsible, caring and amazing men.

Today while I was in the supermarket, three guys were staring at me and following me around in the store. They were making comments amongst themselves but loud enough that I could hear. What they were saying was not derogatory in any way but was so annoying. I gave them a bit of a stinky face to let them know that they were getting on my nerves. I lost them for a bit but when I got to the checkout there they were. They followed me to my car and were whistling and trying to get my attention saying “Hey, you sure are pretty” and stuff like that. Now, mind you….these are GROWN men I’m talking about not teenagers (which still wouldn’t be an excuse). These guys were somewhere in their mid 20’s or so.
Anyhow, I loaded my car and got out of there. When I got home, I knew exactly what I was going to do for my intention today. I marched directly to my son and gave him a quick refresher (cause I have told all my boys this before) of how absolutely annoying and irritating women find that kind of behavior. I told him to flirt is one thing, but what those guys were doing was just childish and stupid. He totally agreed and was like “Come on mom, I would never act like that.”

Well, it was good to give him a refresher even though I know I raised him with more sense than that. When I call Heathers son this weekend, I will be sure to give him the same advice. I know he has his dad there to teach him but I will give him a woman’s perspective on this- I’m sure Heather would have appreciated that.   #letsraiseourboystoberealmen
