Day 262 – Officers Club

I am so sad to say that our friends Jen and Carlos are moving next week. Carlos has been stationed in California which is so exciting for them! I have known Jen about 12 years now- since my Arizona days. Vinny and Carlos have also had a chance to become friends. They are just such a great couple and so entertaining to be around.

The shear chances of life bringing us back together only blocks apart in Newport, RI all these years later is so bizarre in the first place. It has been so nice having them so close. Jen is an avid reader of my blog and has been so supportive to me. As we’ve gone on walks, talked over coffee or a meal or whatnot, she has heard so much about my journey and I have been able to be a part of hers as well. We will miss them so much but will surely stay in touch and see each other again.
So tonight they were my intention. Spending one last time for a while just enjoying each others company; talking, laughing, eating and drinking. They treated us for an evening at the Officers Club on the Navy Base. Carlos is an officer and has told us about this place before but we never got a chance to go so I was so happy to have this evening here. It is directly on the water, with a clear and unobstructed view of the bridge and truly beautiful. In fact, due to the storm that had just passed, the cloud cover was amazing- it was like a sandwich of clouds with sunshine from the sunset in between. We stopped for pictures then went inside for a lovely meal.

Saying goodbye is never easy but one of the lessons I have learned from this blog is that it is the memories and moments we made that I will focus on not the goodbye. I will choose to continue to live intentionally and will make sure that this is not goodbye but simply “see you later”. #HGAL #cherishedfriends

Day 261 – Italian Night

For today’s intention, I participated in Italian Night hosted by our local library. My mom joined me and we walked over to see the showing of a movie called “Golden Door”. They offered drinks, popcorn and brownies which was a nice and unexpected touch. We took our seats and listened to a local woman’s opening remarks about the upcoming movie and upcoming events offered by this Italian American Association. Obviously this event caught my attention because my husband Vinny is 100% Italian and he has told me stories about his grandparents coming from Italy that are so intriguing.

Once the movie begun, Martin Scorsese opened with commentary about what inspired the movie and some of the background. The movie was a reenactment of sorts of a specific family’s journey that started with the difficult decision of going to America- because obviously families of the larger sizes could not take everyone with them. It showed a bit of what it took for them to receive their actual passes to America. Your heart just went out to them when you saw the detailed, arduous journey on the boat, which in this movie they hit a storm and many people died.
Not to mention once they made it to America, without really understanding what was going on – they were put through many medical and educational tests to see if they were “intelligent” enough to be in this society. Also, many of the women were married off in the strangest manner. The man that proposed to the officials for marriage were presented to them in a group setting and the only choice they had was to agree to the marriage or be deported back. These immigrants were actually in quarantine for quite some time, much of which families were kept separated. It just makes you think of this old process in a much different light when you are seeing it on the screen.  It was very educational in fact.

This movie opened my eyes to quite a few different elements of the immigration process back then. It was quite informative and a very unique movie for sure (but then again anything with Martin Scorsese is going to be though right?!?!?). This was a good intention on a dreary, misty evening. #movienight #HGAL

Day 260 – Cardio Dance

My gym recently revamped their class schedule and there are a bunch of new classes that I have been trying to get to (I have not gone nearly enough this summer). Well, for my intention today I decided to just go for it. I know it may seem quite tenacious of me after running my first 5K just yesterday and believe me I am surely feeling it now but in such a glorious way.

I decided to take the new Cardio Dance class. From the very first song- I knew this wasn’t going to be an easy class. It was a high intensity, full cardio blast with hip hop and a couple of salsa songs. The instructor was boisterous, encouraging and so much fun! He was dancing around, giving high fives, banging on the walls to the beat and singing out loud. I loved every second of it. He incorporated squats, jumping jacks, running in place and so much more all while entwining it all with the best dance moves I’ve seen in a long time. The music was loud and the selection was perfect. After the class the instructor was nice enough to pose for a quick pic and I thanked him for an awesome time and said I’d be back soon (and I surely will).
Honestly, had it not been for the blog I’m pretty sure I would have wimped out of this today due to yesterday’s activities. But sure enough, I pushed through and I am beaming with pride at my accomplishment. #lovetodance #justdoit #HGAL

Day 259 – Color Run

Today may have been my favorite intention this year so far! I have never run a 5K and having my first one be The Color Run was probably the best way to go. I can totally see myself doing this A LOT more often.

Tammy, Katie, MacKenzie and I met up first thing this morning. We headed into downtown Providence and were pretty shocked to see just how many people turned out for what they call “The Happiest Run On Earth”. There were literally thousands of people. They released us in “waves”- we were in the third wave, so we got off nice and early.
For those of you that do not know, the Color Run is just that- a 5K run where every ½ mile or so you run through color “stations” of sorts, where people are standing on both sides of you dousing you with colored powder. There is a huge puff of the smoky powder lingering in the air so you can see clearly which color you are approaching. There were people cheering us on along the path. A lot of the roads were closed but at certain parts of the roads you could see drivers staring and smiling and enjoying the sight of us all.

I must say, running through the finish line- all of us girls holding hands with them raised high to the sky- was a moment I will never forget. The pure feeling of such accomplishment was so awesome! The end of the run was up a fairly steep hill, so the push was on but we just kept going. After passing the finish line we received our medals. We were all high-fiving and just smiling, laughing and enjoying the moment. The sight of seeing everyone covered in so many colors was such a happy sight. They had all kinds of goody giveaways and after we collected our things, we headed over to the stage.
The music was pumpin’, the crowd was jumpin’ and we made our way right up close to the front. All of us girls were singing along with the songs, screaming, jumping and dancing around. Every 20 min or so, they counted down and released tons of more color into the crowd. We all had packets of color too and threw them around as well. They tossed gifts and party goods into the crowd and even had a couple of dance offs. MacKenzie got picked to go up on stage and dance! She did SO good and we were all so happy and proud of her.

After partying it up for well over an hour (maybe close to two), we went ahead and left. Tammy took us all out to lunch afterwards which was so sweet. We all have so much fun together and I am so happy to say that when I was leaving the girls asked what we were doing next. I can’t wait to plan our next outing!! But this….this FAR surpassed any of my expectations and I will definitely be at any upcoming Color Runs and strongly encourage anyone reading this to take part as well. #lovetryingknewthings #thatswhatthisisallabout #HGAL

Day 258 – Project Closet

With the chill in the air and the feel of the seasons changing, I decided today would be my day to put away the majority of my summer items and pull out the cool weather clothes, boots, jackets, etc.

I have always been very meticulous about my closet. It really is my favorite room in the house. Even now since we downsized to live by the ocean and with my closet being much smaller than I’m accustomed, I still enjoy arranging, rearranging and decorating my closet. I love the “change of seasons” closet cleanse. I enjoy seeing what I have (and what I’ve forgotten that I have), putting new and exciting outfits together and jotting down notes as to what I want to add to my closet for the upcoming season.
Well, today for my intention I decided to step it up a notch and get an app I have been considering for a while. I downloaded the app Pureple. This app is so amazing! It is a closet organizer and outfit planner. You can upload pictures of everything in your closet as well as shoes, boots, accessories, jackets, scarves, etc. Not only can you put your own outfits together, they will also suggest outfits for you. I love that you can reference your pictures anytime as to not to duplicate purchases while your shopping (this happens with tank tops and yoga pants right?!?!?) Anyhow, your items can be organized by category, season, color, brand and more. There are no limits on how many you can add- you can even add your own categories. You can keep track of when you wore an outfit last, plan upcoming outfits and pack for an upcoming trip and so much more.

I will say that although this takes a bit of time up front, it is worth the effort! I didn’t get everything cataloged so it may take me a few days to get the rest of my things itemized but I was able to play around in the app with what I did have completed. It is so user friendly and truly a lot of fun. #HappySaturday #Cheers #HGAL

Day 257 – Penny Poker

Happy Friday! Today was a really great day. For my intention, after a delicious Chinese dinner – I gathered the family to play some penny poker. I love to play games and cards with the family proved to be huge fun. I have been saying for quite a few weeks that I wanted to do this but we never ended up playing- too many other things kept coming up. It’s funny because whenever I mention to the family that I want to do something for my blog, everyone is front and center. They all know what this means to me, what Heather meant to me. I feel so supported and in turn we are all benefiting greatly. Every single time we do something for this blog- everyone involved is always so happy we did and tonight was no different. Everyone said they had a fantastic time.

Vinny and I made some cocktails, I turned the TV onto the Satellite Radio channel and we all sat together for a couple of hours just playing poker, chatting and enjoying our time together.
Anything that brings the family together for some quality time makes my day and this one did for sure. Didn’t get too many pics because we were just having fun playing but I was able to snap a few….enjoy! #Cheers #HGAL

Day 256 – Jump Start

For my intention today, I decided to do something I have never done before….get an early jump start on my Christmas shopping by beginning my Christmas list and planning. For many years I was a total “last minute” shopper but the last few years I have done better with that. But I have always wanted to have my shopping planned, bought and wrapped by the time the tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving and that is my intention this year. So, I sat down and got to it.

With the amount of family and friends out of state, it’s surely best to get a grip on this early so that everything can get sent off in a timely manner and I don’t have to sweat it like last year. Also, once the holiday parties and traveling begins, I want to be sure that the family and friends here in RI and Massachusetts get their hand delivered gifts well before Christmas as well.
As I wrote the list I realized that this was such a great idea. It is a lengthy list for sure and getting ahead of this now will surely free me up for a relaxing and fun holiday season minus the stress and that is surely what I am about! It will free me up for lots and lots of holiday baking and crafting as well and that makes me smile even now.

Not only did I make my list, I began a folder of crafting to do’s, baking ideas and decorative ideas as well. Yes, this was a great thing to do with my day and it’s all because of this blog once again. #92daystillChristmas #HGAL

Day 255 – Apple Pickin’

HELLO FALL!!!
I LOVE this season with all my heart. The apples, the pumpkin flavored everything, the cinnamon scents, the colorful leaves that are so beautiful especially here in New England, the sound of the crunch of the leaves under your feet when you walk, the cool nights, the amazing home grown corn, hay rides, the clean leafy smell in the air, slow cooker meals, the scarves- boots- hats and comfy sweatshirt evenings. Ahhhhh….

So today to celebrate the official first day of Fall, Vinny and I went apple pickin at Sweet Berry Farm. They had the entire place decked out with all the fall trimmings and decorations. The weather was just a bit cool but very tolerable (high 60’s), the sun was beaming and we just talked and walked the multiple rows and rows of various apples. When we found one we thought looked good, we would share a taste. We filled our bag with the most fresh and delicious apples- both green and red. It was truly a great time and felt so much like the perfect way to bring in the season. #Cheers #HappyFall #apples #HGAL

Day 254 – Simply Heather

Today as I was coming out of the grocery store, I literally gasped when I saw the sky. Instantly I thought of Heather. I cannot say why but I just did. I knew then and there that for my intention today, I would just stop – exactly where I was at that very moment – and allow myself to just remember my cousin and friend. I looked at the almost angelic sky and felt calm. I felt calm and confident that although not having her here with us now is awful and sad on so many levels, I just knew and was reminded even just by the pure beauty and majesty of the sky at that very moment that there is so much more than this.

I will not go into my belief system because that is not for this blog but what I will say is that there have been and continue at times to be fleeting moments of perfect peace and confidence that wash over me and offer me comfort. Today, for my intention I literally stopped right there in the parking lot. I stopped, took pictures and allowed myself a moment of reflection, remembrance and rejuvenation in my faith.
Heather was one of the most beautiful people inside and out to have graced this earth.  I am blessed to have been a part of her life. I am thankful that I have been able to share this blog with people and keep the memory of her very much alive while living my life to the fullest every day and experiencing an intentional piece of living in her honor. #HGAL #justpause #nofilter

Day 253 – International Day of Peace

Today is the International Day of Peace. I looked into it further and found out that the UN established this “Day” in 1981. This is a day that is to be devoted to strengthening the ideals of peace among all nations and peoples. In fact, I also found out that today is an International day of non-violence and cease fire. The realization of these facts makes me appreciate even further the freedoms, safety and comforts I am blessed with.

While researching - I read that anyone, anywhere can celebrate Peace Day and in fact are strongly encouraged to. It can be as simple as lighting a candle, sitting in silent meditation or doing a good deed, sharing thoughts, messages and pictures on social media and many other ways. I couldn’t find any Peace Rallys or Festivals in my area so I decided for my intention today to light candles this evening on the deck. I also posted to social media in support of this very important day.
I wish there didn’t have to be a “Day” set aside for peace. I wish there was peace for everyone, everywhere, every single day. Mother Teresa said it wonderfully when she said “Peace begins with a smile”. So simple….So true. Today I smiled throughout my entire day. Today was truly a great day. In fact, it’s not only the days that are great that I choose to smile, but the days that are not my favorite that it’s even more important to remember to smile. If everyone would take this one simple piece of advice from Mother Teresa, just imagine what an amazing world it would truly be. So, I hope you choose to smile…today and every day. Believe me, smiles are contagious and simply make the world a better place. #HGAL #peace

Day 252 – Paddle Boarding

This was definitely one of my favorite intentions so far!!! The girls and I went paddle boarding and kayaking right back at the same place I went with Tammy and her girls last weekend. Tammy and I met up there just a little earlier than the other ladies and snapped some pics and hung out for a few. Then the others girls arrived shortly thereafter and I was able to introduce Tammy to all the lovely ladies: Elizabeth, Tina, Suzy, Barbara, Christine and Carlin!

Only Tammy, Carlin and I chose to paddle board, the others decided to kayak. Well, let me say first of all I have never been paddle boarding and have wanted to for quite some time. Tammy and I were first on the water. We paddled out just a bit so the others could launch as well and when I went from a kneeling position to a standing position, I lost it and slipped right into the water! It wasn’t very deep at that point  and maybe out of pure reaction I just up and somehow launched myself in the superman position right back onto my board!!! And yes, that famous little girlie squeal I do somehow came out too. Tammy and I ERUPTED in pure laughter. OMG it was all so fast and so hysterical. Anyhow after I got myself situated, Tammy and I just hung out chatting while the others got launched into the water and then we were all on our way.

We paddled down the ocean together in a group. I stayed on my knees for a while then got my courage to stand back up and did. Sure enough, once you get the hang of it, it’s really not hard at all.
Challenging? Yes.      Hard? No.       Fun? ABSOLUTELY!!      What a workout too!!!

One of the ladies had a bit of a harder time and although a couple of the girls tried to help her out, she opted to stay back a bit. The rest of us went ahead on and ended up at the beach. We got off and hung out for a while on the beach together, just chatting and enjoying each others’ company. Carlin took her paddle board to the other side of the beach where there were bigger waves to surf which was so cool for her. What an awesome group of ladies! I am so blessed to have these local friends and am so super excited to have a newfound hobby. I am absolutely getting a paddle board and this will surely be something I do quite often. #SundayFunday #HGAL #beachlife

Day 251 – International Boat Show

This weekend, Newport hosted the 45th International Boat Show. Once you purchase a day pass, you can access everything. So Vinny, Micah and I went over. We toured a “tall ship”, went on multiple boats and even yachts! We stopped for drinks and enjoyed touring the multiple large tents set up with hundreds of vendors and more.

Being that we are looking into getting a boat for next season, it was not only fun but also quite educational and we had a lot to discuss and look into as far as what our goals are for the boat we will get. Vinny made some great contacts as well.
The sun was out and beaming and it was warm and breezy. One of my favorite parts was when we were on one of the big yachts and I went to the bow where there were built in lounge seats and I layed back,  sipped my drink, took in the sights and soaked in the sun. It was a real treat! There were thousands of people and the city was buzzing about which I just love.

A bit later, in the early eveing- we hosted a going away dinner for our friends Jen and Carlos who will be moving in October. We stopped at Cupcake Charlie’s and picked up some sweet treats for our friends. I got them a simple gift that I’m sure Jen will display in her lovely new home in California. After a nice dinner, we all just chatted and enjoyed our evening. They are such an awesome couple and absolutely amazing people and we will surely miss them but I am grateful for the time that I was able to call these friends my neighbors.
All and all this was simply a wonderful day! Cheers and Happy Saturday!! #HGAL

Day 250 – Winding Down

I was talking to my mom today and I told her that with this busy week and very busy weekend ahead, I really thought that simply winding down would make for a great intention. I wanted to make it over to the beach, put down my chair and just relax. She was out and about already, so I told her I would just meet her there.

When I pulled up, the lighting on the beach was just like what a painting or postcard would look like. I was on the phone chatting with my sister and when we said goodbye I told her I would be following up with a picture cause it was just too beautiful and she had to see it. Although the pictures came out nice, it is not like looking with your actual eyes. To hear the ocean waves and seagulls shouting about, to feel the cool, moist air on your skin, etc.
Vinny called while I was there and said he and Micah were just up the road on their way home and I told him they should stop at the beach and meet us. So they did. Vinny put his feet in the water for a bit and we all just watched the sun set and enjoyed conversation and some laughs. Even after we picked up the chairs and put them back in my trunk, we found ourselves sitting on the wall and not really wanting to go. Vinny and I took a couple of selfies and were acting kinda silly together. Yea, this is exactly what I needed.

We came home and had a wonderful dinner together and continued with the week long wind down and let me say, this was a very needed intention for sure! Happy Friday!! #Cheers #HGAL

Day 249 – Pay It Forward

I had plans to go out tonight so earlier in the day I was thinking of what I could do for my intention. As I pulled up to the gas station to fill my tank, I thought to myself about the “Pay It Forward” movement. I have participated before, buying people’s coffee, etc. etc.… but never really talked about it. But for this, my blog intention I am ok to share my experience. And what an experience it was today!

I went inside to pay for my gas with a Shell gift card I had just received today. Even after I paid for my tank to be filled, there was more on the card so I told the girl “Ok, I’ll be back in a moment because whoever pulls up to get gas next- I’m going to buy their gas”. She said “What??? Ok let me get my car and pull it up”! We both kind of laughed and I just stood there. No one pulled up for about a minute or two. Finally, someone pulled up just to the pump right next to my car. I told the girl I’d be right back and I headed outside.

As the woman got out of her car, I slowly approached her and said “Excuse me. I’m not trying to be weird or anything but can I ask you how much you plan to put in your tank today?” Then I quickly followed it with “There is a reason I’m asking you this” (I hadn’t really pre-thought how I would ask but am so glad I did ask it that way).

Anyways, she replied to me exactly this: “One gallon.” My heart dropped and I knew immediately what was happening…I was involved in someone’s blessing. I said to her “Ok, well I am trying to pay it forward and would like to put $20 in your tank if you are ok with that.” She looked at me somewhat in shock and just said “Oh My God yes that would be great”. I went back in and after the gas was paid for we had a short conversation and she explained to me that they had just scraped together enough money for one gallon of gas. I told her that it’s times like this that we see who is involved in our life (and I pointed to the sky). She agreed and her face just told the story. She was so blessed. She was so happy. And frankly, I felt blessed to even be a part of it. There is no way on earth that this was a coincidence. I was getting gas for whoever pulled up next, no matter what. The fact that it was someone who really needed it just made my heart full and content and my faith was strengthened ever more.

I briefly told her about the blog and asked her if she minded if I took her picture and she was happy to oblige. We said our goodbyes and I was on my way. I’m sure I may never see this person again but I will never ever forget this moment. I was involved in a blessing and again- it was because of this blog and my cousin Heather. #PayItForward #gooddeedshelpeveryone #HGAL

Day 248 – Trolley Tour

For today’s intention, I took the family on a local trolley tour. Unfortunately, Vinny was at work and couldn’t get away so it was me, mom, Micah and Elijah. It was a two hour tour that went all around the island and beyond, revealing many facts and interesting history tidbits as well as introducing multiple local farms, orchards, Vineyards and more.

We stopped at the polo grounds and got off the trolley for a bit for a short walk and some local education. Then we went to Sweet Berry Farm. When we arrived I was surprised to see a nice spread of two tables of fresh fruit, cheese and crackers as well as complimentary wine directly from a vineyard we had just visited.
The weather was wonderfully comfortable and in the 70’s. We sat at a well positioned bistro table, in the soft, lush grass, overlooking the apple orchard. We spoke amongst ourselves and mingled with other passengers on the trolley. Afterwards, as we headed back- we passed more vineyards just as the sun was coming down, displaying a beautiful sunset through a unique vantage point: through the many windows of a vintage trolley car that I was lucky enough to be on. I was happy to experience this intention with my family today. #Cheers #HGAL

Day 247 – Fall Trade Show

For today’s intention, I attended the 2015 Fall Trade Show at Twin Rivers Casino in Lincoln, RI. It showcases wines, spirits & craft and import beers. There was an Iron Chef cook off as well as amazing appetizers and other food.

I do enjoy a fine cocktail hour. I was happy to have the chance to educate myself on fine wines as well as spirits both newly introduced and existing products. I toured around with Tammy for a while which was fun as always and she has a vast knowledge of so many of the products which made it interesting too. Then some of my other friends met up with me later- Steve and Kathy, Scal and Kristie and Andrea and I was able to introduce them to others at the show I knew. We walked around- tasting products and mingling. We stopped to eat for a while and watched a bit of the Iron Chef competition and then went back to tasting. We picked the brains of some of the reps which was very interesting as well.
I made notes and took pictures of some of the products I will be adding to our home bar. But, I must admit the most unexpected top favorite of the night was the Forbidden Secret Pumpkin Spice Cream that is a seasonal release for the fall and in my opinion would make a killer fall mudslide. They also make a white chocolate cream that was amazing! The McAdams Caramel Whisky was unexpectedly wonderful being that I am not a real whiskey drinker. RonDiaz Spiced Black Cherry tasted exactly like Cherry Coke and was smooth even just straight, which would be a great drink to have at a party with a bowl of cherries next to it for garnish and decoration. Kinky Flame is totally a favorite of mine (which I already had at home ) lol.

Anyhow, there were so many wines that I fell in love with tonight too but there are far too many to say. I will say I was surprised to have enjoyed Risata Moscato d’Asti because I don’t care for Moscato usually. But chilled nicely, it is quite refreshing, not too sweet and would make an awesome summer sip. I enjoyed learning about so many different wine regions and the how’s and why’s of the depth, color and potency of my beloved red wines as well. All together….tonight was just a great night and fabulous intention. #Cheers #HGAL

Day 246 – Intention Shake Up

This evenings’ sunset had to be the best one of the season so far. I think it literally displayed every color of the rainbow at one point or another. My son Micah said for my intention we should go onto the deck and enjoy the sunset together. I was taking a picture and we were standing there talking about how cool the weather was, how beautiful the sunset and scenery was and the plants on the deck. We decided that since my jasmine plant has grown almost to the point of “out of control” to further my intention I should take some twine and pull some of it together and possibly even trim it down a bit.

Just as I was pulling the vines up to decide how to tie it, Micah was getting ready to snap a picture and I felt a sharp pain in my foot. Apparently, I shook a big huge bumble bee out of the plant. Somehow I stepped just on the side of it as it lay on its back (probably a bit dormant from the cool night air) and it got me- right on the side of my foot! (These bees are usually so friendly, I didn’t even think they stung but I guess when you step on half their body they have no choice but to sting- poor little guy)
I said “Ow, Ow, what was that?” Micah and I looked down and saw it laying there and looked at each other with a bit of shock and amazement. I went in the house in a bit of a panic because the last time I got stung by a bee (when I was a little kid) I had a very bad reaction. Within just seconds Vinny, Micah, Elijah and his friend Eva (who was over for dinner) surrounded me. I was nervous because I didn’t know if I would have a reaction. Vinny and Micah googled it right away. Vinny was looking for a stinger. He packed me some ice and everyone just stayed around me talking and checking in on me very closely for about 30 minutes.

I decided to write about this tonight because the quick action, caring, comfort and attention I received from my family was so heartwarming. I know Vinny and my boys would do anything for me but it’s times like this that just melt a momma’s heart. So, my intention did not work out just the way it was planned but that is life and embracing life’s moments is a majorly important aspect in rolling through the bumps, or stings, life throws our way lol. #HGAL #Imfine #noreactiontothebumblebeesting
Ending of the sunset tonight

Day 245 – Grandparents Day

Did you know that today is Grandparents Day? I didn’t know until midday just today. Well, when I found that out I knew what my intention would be. We had mom over for dinner and for my intention today we celebrated her with some sweet treats. We bought her Pumpkin and Cream Cheese cupcakes.

After some football, conversation and dinner, I presented her with the celebratory snack. I wished her a Happy Grandparents Day and asked the boys to pose with her for pictures (as always I sure wish my oldest son Brian was here too). Anyhow, she was very touched that we honored her today. She didn’t even know that this was Grandparents Day either. Well, from now on it will be marked on my calendar and I will be better prepared in the future.
But on this rainy, Sunday Funday, this was indeed a nice intention. #Cheers #HappyGrandparentsDay #HGAL

Day 244 – Kayaking For a Cause

A few weeks ago, my friend Tammy advised me that there was an upcoming event hosted by The American Cancer Society, Relay for Life called “Kayak for Life”. She knows I am always looking for things to do for my blog and this was definitely a fitting intention and truly a wonderful suggestion. Well, when she realized that I was super excited about it and absolutely interested we made the plan, she was going to bring her daughter, Katie and step daughter, MacKenzie as well. To even further support this amazing cause, her guy bought all the tickets! So super nice of him, right?!?! Thanks Joe!!

So this morning we all got up bright and early to head over to Narragansett, RI to participate in this amazing intention. Just before I left my home I received the most heart warming text message from Tammy that read: “Good morning pretty! Rise N’ Shine it’s almost kayaking time. We do this in honor of your dearest friend Heather and we do this to also celebrate your life.” Well, needless to say I was quite touched by that message and felt honored to have such an amazing person going with me to celebrate life, Heather and so much more!
When we arrived, we got tandem kayaks and teamed up- Tammy and Katie in one and MacKenzie and I in another. The weather was slightly cool (absolutely perfect truly) and the morning started off with quite a bit of cloud coverage. The sun came beaming through later but the weather stayed in fact, simply amazing. We started in the brackish narrow river pass and went up and down the cool, calm waters- taking in the air, the sights, the sounds and enjoying nice conversation with one another. We saw cranes and ducks and even some fish jumping about.

At one point we met up with some of the other participants in the group and together we made our way through the water. We ended up going back on our own way following the curves of the river, under bridges and so on. Eventually, we made our way into the actual ocean just off the beach. We passed multiple paddle boarders, scuba divers, a person doing yoga on a paddle board, boaters, and other kayakers and even a guy paddle boarding with his dog on it with him!
We came to a shallow part of the ocean and the girls got out. They waded around in the water a bit and I just hung my feet over and dangled them into the cool waters. Tammy and I relaxed a bit, soaking in the sun, chatting and just enjoying the beauty we were surrounded by. The girls spotted hermit crabs and they ended up with a handful! Katie just picked them right on up as Mackenzie was picking them up with a clam shell. As I looked into the water I noticed a myriad of tiny fish swimming about as well as these fast moving crabs.

Anyhow, after our 2 hours was up- we made our way back to the beginning. A couple of my favorite parts of the day, other than my perfect company, had to be when we paddled the kayaks backwards for quite some time (what a workout!!). I also loved when we raced each other to the bridge. And then of course, the time I had to talk to Tammy as we discussed Cancer Awareness and the sad loss of way too many really great people, including my cousin Heather. But it somehow wasn’t a depressing moment, it was just real talk and that is what makes these events so very important- raising awareness as well as sharing the memories of those we have lost and keeping their memory very much alive. #HGAL

Day 243 – Adirondack

After a long week, Vinny and I decided tonight to go for our date night to our favorite restaurant for dinner and drinks. After an amazing night together we headed downtown for a walk. Amongst the people, the ocean air and the vibe of the night we decided for my intention to walk down to the pier and sit on the Adirondack chairs ocean side to relax. The ice cream shop, coffee shop and restaurants were surrounding the area and were truly beautiful. The air was slightly cool and breezy and perfect for taking in the night air. We had been looking for an intention for the blog and decided that instead of stressing it, to simply do something relaxing for our intention for an amazing Friday night date night.

I am happy to say that once again my blog has helped me to take full advantage of my night by taking a breath and maxin and relaxin with my hubby on this amazing, end of summer night. #Cheers #HGAL

Day 242 – Gallery Night

Here in Newport, they offer a “Gallery Night- Walking Art Tour” for free every  second Thursday of the month. Tonight I decided to join in. Vinny was at work and Elijah was neck deep in homework but Micah offered to go with me. So we walked down the street to the Arnold Art Gallery. I was surprised to realize upon arriving that I have passed this gallery multiple times but have never stopped in. In fact I don’t believe I even really ever noticed it. The cool thing on this rainy kind of night is that there was a random bicycle parked right in front of the building but when I took the picture I realized just how quaint and special it really looked. It was fairly ironic that the front of the building with this bike actually looked like it could be a picture or piece of art itself.

Anyhow, we entered into what seemed to be a fairly small doorway and I don’t know what I expected but it was nothing what I thought it would be. There were 3 stories of paintings, drawings, sketches, watercolors and more. Art, art and more art. Micah really seemed to enjoy it as well which was neat for me. That isn’t necessarily the “scene” for a 19 year old but he was pointing out some of his favorite pieces and we were discussing some of the art. We wandered around and he took some pics of me (he didn’t want to be in them tonight so I just respected that). Afterwards, we went out for a bite to eat and it was a very nice evening. I am so glad he is happy to be a part of these intentions because I feel like it is even exposing him to some new things which is really awesome.
I strongly suggest that any of my readers look up local art galleries and art related events in your area and participate. I believe art is healing to the soul whether you are an artist or not. Art has the power to transform, educate, inspire and motivate. I personally enjoy getting lost in another’s interpretation of a piece- some art is like being in someone else’s dream. Give yourself the opportunity to open yourself to this world. #HGAL

Day 241 – Spirits & Stogies

For today’s intention, Micah and I went over to a local Resort Hotel called The Viking for a Wednesday night function they have called “Spirits & Stogies”. They have a rooftop bar/restaurant on top of the building that gives you a remarkable view of the city and ocean. I had never been up there before so tonight was the time. I asked Micah if he wanted to join me and he said yes.

When we exited the elevator at the rooftop, we were immediately greeted with live music, a low roar of conversation and the most fragrant aroma of cigars. The atmosphere was at first a little intimidating and I am very glad Micah was there with me. There were mostly men there, puffing on their stogies and enjoying the music, view and quiet conversation. Micah and I checked out the view for a bit then got a table. We enjoyed a little over an hour of great conversation and catching up. I enjoyed a signature drink from their spirit list that was filled with berries and so refreshing on this summer evening.
Everyone went out for dinner afterwards, making this truly a wonderful evening. Cheers! #HGAL

Day 240 – Participate

For today’s intention I decided to participate in a contest. It really wasn’t a big deal but fact of the matter is I normally wouldn’t have entered had it not been for this blog. I was done with what I needed to do at the library and on the way out I noticed a big blue sheep on top of a table with an entry box and signs all around. I walked on by. Then I thought about it and turned back and decided to simply participate. It would only take a moment of my time and would keep me engaged and a part of the life going on around me.

The idea was to name the sheep for the library. So I grabbed an entry form and the first thing that came to mind, I entered on my slip. I thought the sheep should be named “Betty Blue”. Get it? Kinda like Betty Boop but Blue? I thought it was gitchy and cute.
So there it is. A simple intention on a busy day but enough to make me pause and remember the point of this blog….intentional daily living. #HGAL

Day 239 – Tour Guide

This morning began with a workout date with my son Micah. I’m so excited to have my gym buddy back! I work out more when he is around because he keeps me motivated and focused. Anyhow, after getting back home, having some breakfast and hanging out for a while, I decided for my intention today to take him on a tour of Newport. Elijah was out and about with his buddies and Vinny was at work so it was just my Micah and me.

The streets were packed with people. The weather was truly perfect for walking. I showed him so many places I have already had so many intentions. I showed him the underground taverns, the wharf, many piers nearby, some of my favorite shops and restaurants too. I took him by the water taxis, ferries, and up close and personal where the yachts dock. We went to a beautiful historic hotel and walked around inside. We went into a local French Patisserie that specialized in wine and cheese and lingered a bit looking at all the different foods and talking to the staff. We went into the Tennis Hall of Fame even and just looked at the sights and talked about sports a bit. We stopped for drinks and then I just HAD to take him to Cupcake Charlie’s and let him experience the best dessert ever!!
We walked for a couple of hours. We made a few plans for some upcoming intentions and I was just smiling ear to ear and so happy to have him by my side today. When we got home, Vinny was back and we made an early dinner. By that point Elijah was back and my mom had also come over. We watched a movie together and that completed my amazing day and another fabulous intention…..who’da thunk it…me, Newport’s Tour Guide- lol. #HGAL

Day 238 – Yacht Parade

This weekend hosts the 36th Annual Classic Yacht Regatta. There were a slew of events in regards to this celebration all weekend at the local “Fort Adams.” For my intention today I decided to walk over with Vinny this morning to view the annual Yacht Parade. The boys were just waking up and opted not to go but that was fine….hand in hand Vinny and I made our way down the road to Kings Park, which sits ocean side and just across the water parallel to the Fort. We walked along the jetty to the very end and sat on the large rocks. The sun was beaming bright and it was fairly warm but the ocean breeze made the weather truly perfect.

We watched as the parade of yachts and sailboats of all sizes went around the bay. Some crews had matching nautical outfits on, some sang their maritime tunes in perfect unison, some boats had tons of people on them and others with just what seemed to be family. We saw kayakers paddling through and even a couple of paddle boarders roaming through the waters for an up close and personal view. A police boat led the brigade and randomly sounded his siren and flashed his lights. As they arrived to the Fort one by one, a massive cannon went off, booming the sound and smoke into the air and across the bay.
Afterwards, Vinny and I went for a little window shopping and walk through town as the streets began to rapidly fill with people. The rest of the day was one of family, food, some chores and relaxation. Even now as I sit here on my deck writing this blogpost- I am appreciative of the most beautiful, colorful sunset with many of the boats still in view. The crowds have not yet fully subsided and even that just livens up the evening. Happy Sunday Funday!! #HGAL

Day 237 – Island Buggies

Today was one of the best days of the summer. It was our friends, Steve and Kathy (pretty much the best couple I have EVER known) it was their 22nd wedding anniversary today and they wanted to spend it with us here on the island. They brought another wonderful couple Greg and Tami with them (Vinny, Steve, Gregg and Kathy have been friends for literally 30 years). We all hung out on this beautiful, sunny 70 something degree day. They were so happy to see Micah and Elijah again and as always we were so happy to spend time with them!

So the 8 of us went out and rented the island buggies that are so popular all summer long here in Newport. We scootered around the island, up around the mansions, down the main drag and all around Ocean Drive and beyond. We were beeping our horns, racing, playing around and having a true blue blast. Afterwards we walked around and ended up at The Red Parrot for a wonderful dinner. The girls and I wandered around for a little shopping and I showed them some really cool spots just by my house, including the pier just as some paddle boarders were rowing away amongst the boats making for an awesome picture opp.
We stopped in for some Gelato and the guys had stopped in for Elephant Ears. We all ended up back at the house for drinks, conversation and as Kathy and I were on the deck talking away, a random fireworks show started. I was so happy to have a day of fun in the sun with the kids and such great friends. Happy Saturday and Cheers!!! # HGAL

Day 236 – Wash One- Give One

Today was so super busy and so very, very amazing. We had our family time, getting mom settled in her new apartment just blocks away and getting Micah settled in here. Having him here is already such a blessing and I am so very grateful. So, as we were getting his things squared away, I noticed that he arrived with 3 large blankets/comforters. I wanted to get them all washed up so I decided to make a quick run to a local laundromat and put them in a commercial sized washer/dryer.

While I was there I thought of my intention. I saw people coming in and out, some with children some not. Some people looked like they were doing just fine in life, some folks that looked like they’ve seen better days. So I decided for my intention to pay it forward a bit and leave $5.00 in quarters and a note that said to have a wash and dry on me. I hope it ends up helping someone that really needs it. Either way, I was happy to do something to help someone else.
Meanwhile, happy Friday and I wish everyone a happy and safe Labor Day weekend!! Cheers #HGAL

Day 235 – Connection

Today after moving in all the stuff, Micah and Elijah hit the town. A bunch of Elijah’s friends came around to welcome Micah in and walk around the city. I showed Micah a great running path and told him a bunch of stuff about our town. We were all in the car and I mentioned to them that I needed to do my intention for the day cause it was getting late. Well, Micah had been looking forward to a Lobster Roll so I told him that I knew just the spot.

We went to the beach and over to the attached snack bar and ordered a bunch of lobster rolls, fries and drinks. We went to the picnic benches and ate until our hearts were content. We talked and laughed and enjoyed every moment of our time together. Micah said he had a great day and enjoyed hanging out with Elijah. He loves the area and was impressed with how friendly everyone was and how beautiful it all is. Today’s intention was all about connection, beach time and family time and I loved every single second of it. #busyweekendahead #HGAL

Day 234 – Welcome Home Surprise

The original plan when we moved to RI was for the entire family to move together. Just before we left, my two oldest boys decided to stay behind due to their jobs, friends etc. They were roommates at first then each had their own place but stayed very close. The hardest thing I have ever done in my life was to drive away the day we moved. But I knew they had each other and that we would visit often and I couldn’t have been more proud of their independence, hard work at their jobs leading to such early success and I supported their decisions.

Well, I am so happy and proud to say that my middle son, Micah is moving back home. He was doing well but I feel that he is at a crucial age that pursuing his dreams full time is so much more important than working to pay his bills and only devoting ½ his time to his dream. Some of us don’t ever have the chance to truly follow our hearts and dreams and I am happy we are able to give him this opportunity. Anyhow, he will be here later tonight so for my intention today I got a cake that says Welcome Home Micah Man (I’ve called him that since he was a baby). I also made a double size portion of his favorite meal. He says he cannot wait to have my cooking again which obviously makes me feel so wonderful.
I look forward to having him back home again and couldn’t be any happier about it. Vinny and Elijah could not be any happier as well to have him home and I can’t wait to show him all around town and thankfully he is back in time to still enjoy some of this New England summer.

I don’t think my oldest, Brian will move here because his business is doing so well but one never knows….

Day 233 – Alex & Ani Repeat

Tonight was date night! We went out for drinks and a bite to eat just steps away from home. As we were walking down to the restaurant, I was talking to Vinny about what I would do for an intention. I told him I thought it was time to get another bracelet from Alex and Ani – something more specific to Heather-  something that I felt represented her well. So, he suggested we go right then so we walked directly to the store. I had already gotten one that represented the path I was on with this blog, but now I wanted it to directly represent her.

When we walked in, I was kind of prepared to get the letter H. The girls at the store know me now and the story behind my blog which instantly makes me feel so comfortable. When we were looking around, I noticed they have a birthstone line and I knew immediately that I would pick February for her birthstone and that would be it!
It was a beautiful deep purple Amethyst- funny cause my birthstone is light purple Amethyst (jeesh… we are even connected in birthstones!!). I put it with my group of bracelets already dangling from my arm and off we went. We went to eat, drink and enjoy our date night but not before we talked about Heather, the blog and what it all truly means to our life. #Cheers #HGAL
