Day 293 – Corn Maze

Happy Halloween!! Today was so beautiful! The sun was out and it was fairly cool (high 50’s) which made it ideal for a corn maze adventure. I have been wanting to get there but waiting for everyone’s schedule to match up which simply didn’t happen. So today I told Vinny this is really what I wanted to do. The kids had plans but I called my mom and she was in!

I went to a corn maze before in NC but this was one set up a bit different. It was at Escobar Farm in Portsmouth, RI which was only about a 10 min drive. The maze was cut in the shape of the Pawtucket Red Sox symbol. It had 2 phases- the first was pretty easy but the second was definitely not. We actually got lost quite a bit on the second phase. In and throughout the mazes, there were postings of what they called “CORNundrum” brain teasers. They would have a picture and whoever got the most answers at the end won a grand prize for added fun.
We found both bridges and were able to go up on them and overlook the most beautiful sight of the corn maze, barn and autumn tree line. Vinny was joking around at one point and started skipping and I followed suit. But it was then and there I realized that I have never seen him skip- in 12 years together I have never seen that! We cracked up laughing when we realized that. We literally were laughing most of the time we were there. It was just a super fun time.

Then at the end, I spotted some abandoned metal wagons and told Vinny he should totally climb in and sure enough he actually did. I started pulling him and we were both laughing while mom was steady taking pictures. Then Vinny noticed that we were headed down a hill. He tried to jump out but couldn’t and he was like “Sarah wait, wait, wait”. I just kept pulling faster cause he couldn’t get out even though he was trying. OMG – we were all hysterically laughing- it was truly a sight.

Anyhow, we took some more pics and headed out. Vinny said on the way home that this day was so much more fun than he ever anticipated it would be and that this was actually his first time in a corn maze. I am so glad we were able to do something new for him and have such a fun and amazing day. Now we are getting ready to have our family Halloween tradition of watching “Cloverfield” together, eating and snuggling in for a night at home. #Cheers #HappyHalloween #HGAL

Day 292 – Jack-O-Lantern Spectacular

Last year I heard of this awesome display of over 5,000 illuminated Jack-O-Lanterns at the Roger Williams Zoo in Providence. I wasn’t actually expecting the grand display that we saw to be quite honest. I thought it would just be a bunch of lit jack-o-lanterns along the trails of the zoo which would have been cool enough in itself. But this was SO much more!!

They actually had scenes and themes. It almost reminded me of “It’s a Small World” in Disneyworld. Each theme had its own music, lighting, fog or whatever for dramatic effect. The Sleepy Hollow display even had Johnny Depp talking overhead and it was creepy for sure. But not all of it was scary/creepy. There was an entire Wizard of Oz theme with such detail it was amazing!! Somewhere over the Rainbow was playing aloud and even some of the people in the slow moving crowd could be heard singing/humming the words. There was also Phantom of the Opera, Sound of Music, Pirates of the Caribbean, The Golden Age of Hollywood with Gone with the Wind, Casablanca and so many more!!! There was even a music scene with the Beatles, Hendrix, Morrison, BB King and other greats.
There were Jack-O-Lanterns everywhere: along the trails, in the trees, on the water top and more! It really was a spectacular. The night air was chilly but not too cold. Vinny and I slowly made our way through the park and enjoyed walking a bit down memory lane with all of the themes. We snapped a ton of pictures, laughed, talked and enjoyed our date night in this lovely festive setting. I am so glad we made it this year and I fully intend to make this something we do each year. #Cheers

Day 291 – Lunch Date

Vinny came to pick me up today and take me on a lunch date. Although we have done that before, what I wanted to do for my intention was to go somewhere different and go for a nice walk and enjoy this glorious day (not sure how many of these we have left in the season). Although the day started out rainy and gloomy, the sun broke through and made a magnificent stand just prior to lunchtime. The weather was in the 70’s and the day was true perfection so I fully intended to take full advantage.

So when Vinny got there to pick me up instead of just going for lunch, we went for a drive and headed into Wickford Village. This is where we went on Day 182- the Art Festival -  and this is the first time we’ve been back since. This town is so beautiful. It’s small and quaint and filled with art studios and galleries, cafes and bakeries and multiple other small businesses. The leaves seemed to have fallen so perfectly it actually looked like art in itself. The ocean is visible throughout the town with bridges, boats, churches and more making it just so very “New England” on every level.
After we walked a bit, talking and taking in the beauty and fresh air we headed over to a lovely café called Beach Rose Café. They have indoor and outdoor seating and obviously we opted for the outdoor waterfront seating. The food was amazing and the service was as well. This is the kind of day a girl could get used to for sure….a beautiful day, beautiful surroundings and perfect company for this lunch date kind of intention. Here’s to seizing the opportunities and living every moment to the fullest - Cheers!!  #HGAL

Day 290 – National Chocolate Day

Yes, you read that right!!! It’s National Chocolate Day!!!

I surely couldn’t let this day pass without including it in the blog. So earlier in the day I gratefully indulged in my latest obsession: Ritter Sport Vanilla Chai Latte Winter Edition Chocolate Bar. It really is quite heavenly. The rich, smooth chocolate- the creamy Vanilla Chai Latte center....I kid you not it is a top ten all time faves as far as chocolate goes in my book.
But moving on- I decided to celebrate National Chocolate Day by adding a twist of the holiday season that is among us. I made the cutest (and easiest if I must say so myself) little Halloween treats for the family for dessert. They are pudding graveyard cups. Actually it was really easy because all I did was write RIP on a Milano cookie with black icing then crush up the cookie part (not center) of some Oreos and add a pumpkin to the top and Viola!...the cutest little Halloween and Chocolate Day dessert was served.

Vinny, Micah and Elijah again expressed how cool they thought that was and we all ate them right up. Once again I am just so happy that no matter how old the kids get, they are never too old to appreciate and enjoy the extra steps I take to make our lives a little more enjoyable and interesting when and where I can. Again I will say, the best part of life is in the details. Cheers to making the happiest of memories this holiday season and beyond! #HGAL

Day 289 – Fright Night

For my intention today I decided since this is Halloween week, tonight would be Fright Night at our house- a night of scary movies. Every year on Halloween we watch Cloverfield. This started about 6-7 years ago and is just a tradition now to do on the actual Halloween late night after all the festivities are over. But for tonight I wanted to watch a different movie (reserving our Cloverfield tradition for Saturday) and to take it one step further, I put out a nice spread of all appetizers to nosh while we watched.

Vinny helped me every single step of the way and together we made deviled eggs (and cut up black olives to look like spiders on them) the kids loved those (never too old)! We put together a really neat skeleton made out of all fresh veggies- that was super cute and so fun!! We made mini BLT bites with cheese, we put out Bagel Bites, popcorn, Cool Ranch Doritos, and mini peanut butter cups with pretzels.
We all agreed on a movie, snuggled in our blankies on the couches and watched our scary flick and ate all our yummies. This was a great family intention with some fun festive treats to cap off a good day. #HGAL

Day 288 – Book Fair

Our local library had a book fair today. When I saw the posting for it I knew that was exactly what I wanted to do for my intention. Yesterday as I was talking to one of the girls while decorating cookies, I was asked if I belonged to a book club or if I would like to. I immediately said “I just don’t have the time to read lately.” As I got thinking about that later, I was fairly disappointed in my reply. Yes…my life is extremely busy, sometimes bordering on hectic. But I have always enjoyed reading. I love getting lost in a really good book or simply rereading specific passages near to my heart. A book club is something I have never done and really should have accepted the invitation when it was presented to me.

When I saw that there was a book fair today, the timing was so funny to me, obviously it was just what I needed to do. I went to the library and wandered around looking for something that interested me. I found a really fun read by Kate Spade entitled “Occasions” that I knew immediately I just had to have. It’s all about decorating, hosting the perfect party and various other posh subjects. The other book that looked fun and caught my eye was entitled, “The Dish on Eating Healthy and Being Fabulous”. Well if that wasn’t a book for me, I simply don’t know what would be lol!! It’s a much bigger book but looks like a super fun read!
Anyhow, I made time to look through those books tonight a bit and I plan to read them both for sure! This was a timely intention and I am happy to get back to my love of reading and not let life’s busy nature get in the way of that again. #HGAL

Day 287 – Volunteering and Cookie Decorating

My day began at 4:30 this morning as I woke up bright and early to report for volunteer duty at 5:30am for the Annual Pell Bridge run. Actually, one of my readers suggested I volunteer for this service through the local MLK Center and I did. It was such a rewarding experience. I met a bunch of new people and ran into some others that I know- including Tammy who was actually in the race!!

I started out by handing out bibs to the runners and instructing them onto the shuttles. I then went to assist with setting up the finish line (I ziptied the liners) and then reported over to hand out shirts to all the runners as they completed the race. A local DJ came over to take pictures of us for their website so I snapped one as well. As they made their way in, the runners were very grateful to us for volunteering and many extended their thanks which was very nice. Then to finish it up, I helped break down boxes and tables in assistance with cleanup. All and all I was there just over 3 hours and it was so rewarding.
I came home and made breakfast for the family (Vinny had coffee waiting thank goodness!) After breakfast, we prepped and readied the crockpot with dinner. After resting for just a bit, I headed over to the Vanderbilt Grace to meet a group of ladies for cookie decorating. It was such a great time! We chatted and talked while decorating cookies with the chef of this posh location. We spoke about the blog and they were so very receptive and supportive. I got to listen to a couple of the ladies’ stories as well and feel like real connections were made. It’s amazing how this blogs intentional living has put some of the kindest people in my path and I am truly grateful.

Afterwards I came home to finish up our dinners final touches and after eating we enjoyed those delicious cookies and watched movies together as a family. And I must admit, there may have been one of the most beautiful sunsets ever tonight to end this weekend so perfectly. Cheers to an amazing week ahead….embrace it. Life is truly good!! #HGAL

Day 286 – Make a Difference

Today is National Make a Difference Day! As my day began and Vinny and I began running our errands, I mentioned to him that I wanted to participate in this National Day for my intention.

What does it really take to make a difference? In some cases it can be a monetary donation, opening your home to foster a child, mentoring someone, volunteering or some other type of gesture. In other cases it could mean offering a smile or simple “good morning” to someone that looks out of sorts or like they are having a bad day or even just holding the door for someone. Sometimes a compliment could make a huge difference in the day of someone. Making a difference comes in many forms and many degrees.
I did not want to plan out my ways to make a difference today. I wanted the opportunity to present itself to me, for me to recognize it and take the opportunity. First, we decided to go feed the birds. The weather is changing and getting colder and I am always concerned about the animals and how they make it through these cold days. It was quite the frenzy but Vinny and I had fun feeding them and some other people at the beach were smiling and taking pictures at the sight- there were well over 100 seagulls around us!

Afterwards, we headed to Dunkin Donuts for a nice hot cup of coffee. Vinny and I decided that we would pay for the next person that came through the drive through (we were inside). So I mentioned to the girl working that it was National Make a Difference Day and what we decided to do. The next guy ordered a large coffee only. After he pulled around to the window and they told him his order was paid for, they asked me if I would come over because he wanted to thank the person that did that. I wished him an awesome day and he was very appreciative (and looked fairly surprised).
Moments later as we were sitting there, a woman came in and paid for an order that contained 6 large bags of many boxes of doughnuts. She went out with half of it but couldn’t carry it all. So I decided to get up and get the rest of the bags and take them to her car for her. She was so thankful and surprised that I did that. She just kept saying thank you over and over and I was fairly saddened for a brief moment that someone would be that surprised at another persons’ kindness. But I told her it was no problem really and wished her an awesome weekend. Clearly just our time at D&D’s made the difference in the day of 2 strangers.

I decided that I wanted to stop and get my mom flowers to make the difference in her day. To take it one step further, I invited her over for dinner as well. We ended up deciding on a beautiful house plant and my mom was both surprised and super happy.
I wish every day was Make a Difference day, which for each of us it really can be if we so choose.  I must admit that although it may have made a difference in their day – it truly made a difference in mine as well. Kindness always feels so good and usually helps the giver as much as the receiver but being kind with intention is awesome squared!! #lovetoday #HappySaturday #HGAL

Day 285 – Fun Clapping

This evening as we were getting ready to go out to dinner, I was trying to decide what I wanted to do for my intention. I thought about how Heather and I used to play those fun hand clapping kind of games when we were little. Vinny and Micah were sitting there and I started sharing some of the songs with them that Heather and I used to sing while clapping our hands together, snapping our fingers etc. in a choreographed routine. They were so popular back then and we would learn them at school and share what we learned when we were hanging out. We had so many like Ms. Mary Mack, Bubble Gum Bubble Gum in a Dish, Down Down Baby, Patty Cake, When Susie was a Baby and so many more.

I got Vinny up and started showing him how the songs and routines went. We were hitting our hands together and clapping as I sang the songs - he is such a great sport! Anyhow at one point, I couldn’t remember one of the songs that was actually one of Heathers’ favorites- I could only remember the ending. So I picked up the phone and called my sister. She immediately started singing her favorite one called Bo-Bo Ski Watten. OMG I started cracking up because as soon as she started singing it, I could hear her clapping in the background and I chimed right in and sang the rest of the words with her. I never would have remembered that one on my own. We were laughing so hard!! Then she started rambling off so many others and we were both amazed at her memory.
She was at the mall with her friend Rebecca when I called and even she got in on the fun. So I asked my sister to take a picture of them doing the fun clapping to a song and she did. In fact, when we talked later tonight, she said she even called one of our brothers and he remembered a bunch of them too and said his daughters know all of those routines.

What’s fun about this blog on days like today is getting others involved in my memories and intentions. We all got to walk down memory lane and had so much fun in the process all while keeping the memory of Heather fresh in our minds. #misshersomuch #HGAL

Day 284 – Fall Décor

This is absolutely the latest in the year I can ever remember decorating my home for the holidays. I love to decorate and change things up. However with my daily activities and the blog intentions, I have found myself so busy that I literally have not even had a chance to take out my fall décor. So tonight Vinny made dinner while I pulled everything out.

Obviously living in the city our home is smaller than we are accustomed. I actually am quite fond of it this way to be quite honest. But with that being said, when I pull out my decorations, I really have to pick and choose carefully what I want to display. First of all, I can’t stand clutter so I try to strategically place things just perfectly. For fall especially, I just like hints throughout the house. I get a little more crazy with Christmas decorations but fall is a balancing act.
Every year I like to pull out my favorite items, add a couple more new items for the current year and rearrange what I did the previously year just to keep things fresh. This year was no different. But when I was done, Vinny said he was really impressed with what I had done. I love my sparkly faux pumpkins, flowers here and there, my awesome large shimmery multi-colored turkey (that I named Henry last year) lol, the cinnamon pinecones offering such a festive fragrance to the room and so much more!

I am so glad I finally took the time to get this done. Looking around my home is just further reminder of how fast time flies because I just can’t believe we are almost at the end of another year. This in turn just keeps it fresh in my mind to always live life to the fullest every single day- it just goes way to fast. I fully intend to embrace every second for as long as I possibly can and hope you do as well. #Cheers #HGAL #lovetodecorate #timefliessoembraceeachday

Day 283 – Back to the Future Day

Today is the day that they went to the future in the movie “Back to the Future” made back in 1985. All day it has been on the news, social media, radio and talked about amongst many. They had special screenings of it at select movie theatres across the country that were sold out. Many commemorative goods are being sold to celebrate this day which I just thought was so funny when I heard that.

I remember watching this movie as a little girl. I remember having a crush on Michael J. Fox like so many other little girls in the 80’s. And even as we do today, I remember back then thinking to myself what would the world be like in 30 years.
So for my intention I decided to gather the family after dinner and watch this movie, Back to the Future. I made root beer floats to go with our dessert. We all enjoyed watching this movie together. As far as 80’s movies go, this one isn’t as completely corny as most lol. Actually, anything that we can do as a family I just love so this was another well spent intention. #HappyHumpDay #HGAL #BacktotheFutureRocks

Day 282 – Pumpkin Carving 2.0

Ok maybe that’s silly but I’m calling it 2.0 because I think I took it to another level this year. I try to stay as unique as possible but really wanted to do something different this year for our pumpkins. It all started when last year I saw a Cookie Monster pumpkin and just knew I would want to do that for Micah one day because since he was little (and even still) he just loves Cookie Monster. Luckily enough, he is living here now so I just knew this would definitely be my intention to surprise him with. That being said, ironically enough Elijah has always loved Elmo. So I figured I would do a Cookie and Elmo and even though they are older, the boys would just love it.

But when I got to the store, I figured I would get two small ones for Vinny and I as well. Vinny and Micah were at work so it was just Elijah and me this evening for a bit. He hung out with me and decided to help me with my project. We carved, gutted and painted away while talking and hanging out. While we were waiting for the paint to dry, Elijah decided he was done but I was so glad to have had that time with him and was glad that he did the carving for me which was a big help.
So, I finished up the final touches, made the eyes and Elmo’s nose out of ping pong balls, drew the face on the small pumpkin, made the top hat out of construction paper, etc etc. Just as I was finishing up Vinny and Micah got home. They just loved what we created. When it was all done and set up on the table, I was so happy with the final result!! It was a little over two hours to complete them all but it was time very well spent. This was really a fun project!! #HGAL #craftingtimeofyear

Day 281 – Crafty Autumn Gifts

Today for my intention, I decided to make a couple of gifts for my friends Tammy and Kim. I will see them tomorrow and thought what a great touch to their day it would be to make something especially for them in celebration of the fall, Halloween, etc.

I saw the cutest pin on Pinterest that I posted to my board that I just knew I had to make time to do this season and today was just that day. It was a Terra Cota clay pot painted to look like a candy corn and filled with candy and a bow. So, I gathered the supplies earlier today and after dinner, sat at the table to tackle this project. I painted the pots freehand and it was surprisingly easy- I just worked from the bottom up. The yellow and orange needed about three coats and the white went on nicely with only two.
After it was all dry, I filled up some Halloween treat bags with Peanut M&M’s, Sixlets, Whoppers, Peanut Butter Kisses, Sweeties and of course Candy Corn!! Then to top it off, I tied a black shimmery cloth ribbon at the top in a sweet little bow. All and all it was a little over an hour out of my day to make the day of others and worth every moment. This is definitely a gift I will make in the future again. #lovetocraft #HGAL #candycornlove

Day 280 – Seafood Festival

The Newport Seafood Festival was this weekend. I headed over this afternoon as it was conveniently just a handful of blocks from my house. I asked my mom to meet me there because I just knew she would really enjoy this. Upon arriving I was pleased to see that it was much larger than I thought it would be. The festivals and activities in Newport are done so right and I am happy to have been a part of so many of them.

Anyhow, there were three different live bands playing on different sides of the festival. There were stands set up under tents and throughout the wharf with vendors and restaurants offering an amazing array of every kind of seafood that you can imagine. There were also quite a few beers and festive autumn drinks offered as well as multiple desserts.
I slowly wandered through the event, pausing to take time to listen to each of the bands as they were all very good. I sat on an Adirondack chair right on the water for a bit and just took it all in. Then when my mom met up with me, we went over to see the newest tall ship which was so cool – I just haven’t gotten used to these ships in the harbor, they are so neat to see.  Mom got some food but mostly we just hung out listening to music and enjoying the festivities offered. Although it was only in the 40’s, the sun was bright and peeping through the beautiful, large, white, billowy clouds in the sky. This to me was perfect, it made the Seafood Festival that much more authentic feeling in my opinion….it just felt so very New England and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

This was a beautiful day and great intention for sure. #Cheers #HGAL #HappySundayFunday

Day 279 – Tailgating

What a day! For today’s intention, we got up nice and early and headed into Massachusetts to meet up with our friends, Steve and Kathy. They got us all tickets to go to the UMass football game where their son goes to school. It’s about a 2 hour drive up north but worth it!! The drive was so amazing- the colors turning every shade autumn proudly delivers and it was something truly spectacular!

Anyhow, unfortunately the kids couldn’t go because Micah is under the weather with a cold and Elijah couldn’t get out of work. But Vinny and I went and had an awesome time. Steve, Kathy and their kids, their kids’ friends and parents, Kristi and her kids, Wendy and her kids were all there too. Not to mention about 20,000 college kids attending and tailgating there. We went to Gillette Stadium in Foxborough with Steve, Kathy and their friends to tailgate and see the game before last year and this was every bit as much fun if not more.
We grilled tons of food, ate, drank, played games and hung out for a few hours before game time. Then we headed in to enjoy the actual football game. College football is such a different beast – the vibe is so amazing and I just soaked it up. The weather was cool and later in the day actually a bit cold which to me is just true football weather. Kathy was prepared thank goodness….she had extra sweatshirts and jackets, hand warmers, scarves, gloves and more. She does such an amazing job with tailgating – she literally doesn’t miss a detail. (Truth be told, I thought I was good but she really is “The Hostess With The Mostess” lol) #adoreher

Anyhow, after the game we all went out to dinner. I just love hanging out with this awesome group of people. On our way home, Vinny and I reflected a bit on how perfect the day was. It’s truly days like this that you just never, ever forget. We are most definitely going again when both the boys can go as well.  **Btw... everyone LOVED the Jell-O shots and Rummy Gummies!!** #Areyoureadyforsomefootball #Lovetailgating #HGAL

Day 278 – Jell-O Shots

I have an awesome intention planned for tomorrow that I am preparing for today. So for today’s intention I decided to take a fun step outside of my “norm” and make some awesome treats that I have never made before- Jell-O Shots and Rummy Gummies!! I am also making some appetizers and snacks but my intention is to make these drink treats that I have never attempted before.

I have had plenty of occasions in the past when I was out or at gatherings that someone made Jell-O shots and I partake. In fact, it makes me think back to a time I had a party at a night club in Arizona many years ago and Heather and her husband came from California to go to it and we had Jell-O shots together that night. I have a picture from that night in fact (quite a few shots in lol) where Heather, me and my friend Allison were getting ready to take our Jell-O shots and dabbed the whip crème on our noses just being silly. That was such an awesome night and weekend. They stayed at my house and the entire weekend was full of cooking and eating, laughing and reminiscing and I remember it so vividly.
Anyhow, I digress… I have never actually made Jell-O shots. I had also come across a really fun looking recipe on Pinterest called “Rummy Gummies” that I just had to try as well. So, I called my mom to come over and hang out with us, have dinner and join me in tonight’s intention.

After dinner, we made Berry Blue and Cherry Jell-O shots and made individual cups of the Rummy Bears that have been soaking for a couple of days. They were super easy to make actually. We had the music going, Vinny was there hanging out with us and of course I can always be counted on to dance around a bit and just have a fun, silly time. This simple intention made me think so much about Heather because together we were always just that: silly, fun, singing, dancing, talking and laughing- just so full of life. I embrace exactly that today and always- not only for myself but on behalf of my lovely cousin and friend. #Cheers  #missingHGAL #singdanceandloveyourlife

Day 277 – Welcome Wagon

Yesterday as I was chatting with my friend Lena, I invited her out with me and some of the girls tonight for “Boozy Bingo” at our local Wharf Pub. At that time she said she probably couldn’t make it. Today I really wasn’t too sure if I was going to go or not, I had a very busy day and was kind of tired so was a little on the fence. Lena texted me this afternoon to see if I’d like to take her new friend Jen out with me tonight because she really wanted us to meet anyways so this would be perfect. And with that my mind was made up and intention set.

I was happy to be the “Welcome Wagon” to Jen who is new to the area. I have made friends with some of the sweetest ladies and was more than happy to introduce her and hang out with everyone tonight. About 15 minutes before it was time to meet, Lena said she actually could go which was awesome! So we headed over to the pub.
Once we met up with the girls I was more than happy to introduce them all. There were too many of us to fit into one booth, so we were sitting in two places but I went back and forth all while trying to keep up with a little Bingo at the same time. In fact, I even got to meet a couple of ladies tonight for the first time that were so super sweet and we friended on social media and will surely keep in touch. We talked about the blog a bit and I was happy to share some of the upcoming events I have planned.

I must say, I am so happy to have gone tonight. Just being out with the girls laughing, talking, drinking and hanging out is such a fun time and I surely look forward to the next event we plan. And being able to help Jen meet some other people and get her involved in the community makes me feel so good.
And yes, it is so very ironic that my friend Jen just moved away and in moved another Jen! I just love life’s little ironies. #Cheers #greatgroupofgirls #missingmyotherJentoo #HGAL

Day 276 – Leaf Peeping

Recently, my friend who is a born and raised New Englander told me about “Leaf Peeping”. I must admit I honestly thought she was pulling my leg. But come to find out, that is a real thing. That is what they call it when people come to New England to look at the leaves….leaf peeping. As soon as I realized she really wasn’t kidding I knew that I would just have to do that for the blog one day as an intention.

Today was just that day. It was so beautiful today. The sun was in full effect with some nice bright white clouds in the sky. I headed over to an extremely large park in East Greenwich, RI called Goddard Park. This is the same area where I went horseback riding on day #202. I thought about the amount of trees, the golf course, the stables, the beach and so much more that I just knew this would be a perfect place to go leaf peeping (lol).
So I bought my lunch and drove over. As I made my way through the park, I literally found myself gasping out loud at the beauty I was surrounded by. The colors of the leaves that were turning were so vivid, bright and cheerful. The breeze in the air made them cascade down from the trees like a colorful waterfall. I pulled the car over to take some pictures. As I was walking around, I felt and heard the leaves crunching under my feet. I LOVE that so much! I could smell the distinct freshness of the leaves in the air. I could see them tumbling along the ground, down the paths and found myself just staring all around, breathing deeply and enjoying the sounds of the birds singing all about.

I do believe this blog is turning me into a “scenery” kinda girl. I never remember pausing and enjoying scenery ever more in my life than I do now. I believe that living with intention and being actively grateful for the life I have has made me feel ok to slow down and take these types of moments to revel in true peace. So, right there in the park I sat and enjoyed my lunch. I didn’t have on any music. I didn’t talk on the phone. I just sat there eating and allowing myself the time to enjoy my afternoon of leaf peeping. #Autumncolors #HGAL

Day 275 – Cider Night

Originally I had something planned for my intention today. But when I met Vinny at home in the early evening, he was recovering from a fairly rough day. We all have them and he doesn’t have many which is nice, so I wanted to honor that. Clearly he needed a different kind of night than what I had planned.

I do not plan out all of my intentions- I quite enjoy the spontaneity of them as often as possible. So, with that I asked him to get in the car and come with me for a new idea.
I drove us over to the nearest Dunkin Donuts to get some nice hot cider. Vinny opted for hot chocolate but I went with the apple cider. It was the perfect cider kind of evening- overcast and a bit chilly. We headed right on down to the beach. I told him I just wanted to sit together in the cool evening air- on the wall that was separating us from the high tide and just have our drinks, chat and relax into our evening. Dinner was cooking at home and the night was ours. We sat there talking and sipping our warm fall-time drinks, breathing in the ocean air and watching a couple of surfers.

By the time we left, he was smiling and said he felt so much better. Sometimes what may seem like a bad day just requires reflection, perspective and a change of pace and scenery certainly helps as well.
I am so happy that my impromptu intention helped turned my hubby’s bad day into a wonderful night. #Cheers #oceanairhelpseverything #HGAL

Day 274 – Columbus Day Parade

On this beautiful, bright, sunny, lovely day- I headed a couple blocks down to enjoy the Columbus Day parade for my intention. I called my mom and her friend Dolly to see if they wanted to meet me there since Vinny and the boys weren’t here until later in the afternoon. We met up at Starbucks (ps…have you tried the new Graham Latte??? To Die For!!). After we got my midday caffeine fix, we went over where people were just starting to sit in preparation for the parade.

As we were taking pictures, I randomly got in a conversation with a lovely woman name Rose who was on a cruise and here only for the day. I told her about my blog and she shared with me that she was a Breast Cancer survivor herself. She showed me the pink in her hair (super cute!) and the pin she had in support of this Breast Cancer Awareness Month. She allowed me to take her picture and put her in the blog today. In fact, just as my mom went to take the picture, she said “Save the Ta-Ta’s”- it was unexpected and I just laughed and loved her spirit. She was just such a happy, friendly woman and I am so glad she was able to beat this awful disease.

So, we sat there and watched a nice parade here in the heart of my little town. Afterwards, I went home to meet up with Vinny and we went to the beach for an amazing afternoon together. It was like 70-something degrees outside and I’m not sure how many of those days we have left in the season so I was determined to enjoy every second of it. We saw so many people sunbathing, walking and with their pets it was just truly picturesque.
When we got home, we walked over to the Vanderbilt Grace Hotel to enjoy the last day of the open Rooftop Lounge and Bar. We sat for a while enjoying the scene, sun and each other before coming home to cook dinner together and relax tonight.

I hope all of you, my readers enjoyed their long weekend and have a blessed upcoming week. #Cheers #HGAL #ILOVEPARADES

Day 273 – Bike Ride

Today’s intention was so simple and so awesome! In the midst of the afternoon, after we got in from a wonderful morning of breakfast and services- I was catching up on laundry and house stuff, while Vinny was having his much deserved Sunday football down time. The sliders were all open and the ocean breeze was wafting through the house, bringing a crisp freshness throughout.  I looked outside and said to myself that there is just no way I wanted to remain inside this afternoon. I wanted to have an intention outside. And then an idea popped immediately into my head!!

I have been wanting to ride my bike all season. For some reason I just haven’t. Whether I said there was just too much tourist traffic and I was nervous or whatever the reason, I just never took my bike down. So I knew immediately today was the day. I asked Micah to bring the bike down and come across the street with me while I rode around for my intention and he was instantly in. Once we got over there- I was riding around and laughing and smiling so big and Micah was laughing too at the sight of it all.
I said to him, “I can’t even remember the last time I rode a bike. This is so much FUN!” He was snapping pictures and saying that he was so glad I was having fun. I rode around by the ocean and harbor, then on the side street. Afterwards, I thanked Micah for coming with me and taking pictures and he said he was happy to. I looked right at him and said “See, again all because of my blog and living my life with intention. This is just so great.”

When I got back inside and back to my cooking, cleaning and Sunday “what what”, I realized I was still smiling. Vinny said he was so glad I was having so much fun that he may buy a bike for himself so we can go together next time. Needless to say, I’m going to make sure that happens. Something so simple…so packed with pure fun!! #Cheers #HappySundayFunday #HGAL

Day 272 – Celebrazione!

Today for my intention I decided to take part in the 60th Annual Festa Italiana, which is a celebration of Italian culture at a local park in my area. I met up with my mom and her visiting friend, Dolly. We went to Starbucks for a nice warm coffee on what started out as a fairly brisk morning. With the sun shining bright, a light ocean breeze and the streets packed with people, we made our walk to Touro Park.

As we got closer, I could hear the buzz of people in the air and the authentic Italian live band playing. Upon entering the festivities we mingled amongst the people, took in the music and visited the vendor booths. There were kids climbing trees, getting their face painted, the smell of Italian food wafting throughout the area, kids and couples dancing and more. It was a great way to spend a portion of my afternoon.
Afterwards, we all walked down to the wharf, shopped a bit, and just enjoyed a marvelous day. And with that, I was able to make it home just in time to spend the second half of my day with Vinny and the kids. #Cheers #HappySaturday #HGAL #LifeisreallyaCelebrazione!!

Day 271 – Sip & Shop For A Cause

October is not only Breast Cancer Awareness Month it is also Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Anyone that knows me- knows how near and dear to my heart this cause is. Over the years I have hosted multiple events to give back and donate to this cause which in itself has been very rewarding. Therefore, I was more than happy to attend this event this evening.

It was hosted by Angela Moore at her lovely boutique in the heart of Newport. She personally creates a wide variety of jewelry pieces that are super cute and very trendy. Not to mention the other accessories, shoes, clothes, purses and more. They had an attractive spread of cheese, crackers, fruit and wine to munch and sip as you shopped. The whole setup was so classy and done in such great taste. The slogan on the gifts offered stated “No More” and this was tagged on the mints, pens, Chapstick, etc.
But I must say that the highlight of my evening was definitely being able to meet and converse at length with the Event Coordinator of The Women’s Resource Center, Kate. She was so welcoming and an absolute delight to speak with. We talked about my blog and she introduced me to some of the other ladies and had me tell them about it as well. I was so completely humbled at their instant support. They were so very genuine and receptive to the entire premise of my blog and just all around a great group of gals.

Knowing Heather the way I did- I know for a fact that she would be so touched and happy with the response and support of everyone that she knows and completely blown away at the love, support and encouragement of those that she doesn’t. Anyone that met her was the better for it and I am just so blessed to be able to share her lovely memory with so many people.
Meanwhile, if you find yourself wanting to give to a cause, please look up your local Woman’s Shelter- the statistics are absolutely alarming of the massive number of people (no matter the social or economic background) that are affected by this epidemic. And if you are a victim, I urge you to do exactly what The Women’s Resource Center urges: Take A Stand. Get Help. Say “No More”. Together we can end domestic violence and sexual assault.

Day 270 – Art After Dark

For my intention today I headed over to the Newport Art Museum for a function they call “Art After Dark”. It’s a night of appetizers, activities, music, drinks and art. I went to the Newport Art Museum before for the outdoor movie night this summer but I have never actually been inside. I was shocked at the size of it! When I walked through the door and saw the grand staircase and heard the live music playing, I was instantly relaxed and felt very comfortable. I signed in, grabbed a pamphlet and made my way through room after room, floor after floor just wandering about looking at the art, photography and sculptures. I didn’t mind going alone because this allowed me to go at my own pace and linger when I wanted to.

They had appetizers that were quite delightful and a bar area set up. Various activities including collage making, color blending and so on and were set up in perfect timing from one room to the next. There were people there of all ages which was nice as well. I just love the variety of events offered in my area that are based around the arts. I have enjoyed immersing myself in such a culture filled environment.
So, I have always gone through local papers to find out about all of the local events offered and would strongly suggest that if you want to get involved in a wide variety of events and activities, check out the local papers and magazines in your area. Many of these events I attend are free or minimal fees and it opens you up to participate in events you may not even be aware of that are taking place right by you too. #Cheers #branchoutandtrysomethingnew #HGAL

Day 269 – Furry Friends

For my intention today, I decided to give to my local animal shelter. I called earlier in my day to see how many animals were at this shelter and there are a lot more cats than dogs. So I picked up some cat and dog treats and headed over.

When I got there, I was so impressed with the condition of this facility called Potter League for Animals. When I walked in I was happy to see how absolutely clean and bright the inside was. The staff greeted me immediately and they were happy and receptive to my donation. While talking with one of the wonderful staff members, I asked if I could take a picture for my blog. We talked about the purpose of my blog and she had me write the web address down and said she’d like to look into it which was super cool. Then she even offered to bring a kitty in for the picture. I was so happy with that and absolutely agreed – what a perfect picture it made!
She came back with the cutest little grey and white kitty cat ever! It took everything in my power not to adopt him right then and there. He sat there and posed with the treats and allowed me to pet him too. Upon further discussion with the office staff, they mentioned that they were volunteers. That was so impressive to me. Whether it’s donating your time, food, money or treats- every little bit helps. We can’t neglect or ever forget about our furry little friends that don’t have homes- their lives matter too. #HGAL

Day 268 – Spin on S’mores

For today’s intention, I decided to make and share an awesome fall dessert. When the kids were younger, instead of making messy S’mores, I liked to make an interesting spin on S’mores recipe. I mean, the original S’more in my opinion is meant to be eaten while you’re camping and sitting around the fire right?? Well, I haven’t been camping since I was in my early 20’s. So, if you’re indoors….what do you do? I found a way that my family could still enjoy this favorite pastime. Especially when their friends were over, it was so fast and easy to whip up a batch and let them go at it. No mess, no fuss.

Here’s what I would do: I began by melting my chocolate chips and a little milk (to make it a smoother consistency) on the stove. Meanwhile, while that was heating up I would crush up a bunch of graham crackers. Next I would stick a toothpick in each huge marshmallow. Holding the toothpick, I would roll the marshmallows one by one in the chocolate then immediately roll them in the graham crackers.
That’s it!! I haven’t met anyone yet that didn’t love this awesome dessert. And this is just another fun and yummy way to welcome in the season. I was just talking to one of my friends today actually and told her how happy I was that fall was here. The leaves are turning, the nights are chilly and the air is crisp and clean.  And of course….let the fall cooking and baking begin!! #HGAL

Day 267 – Finger Painting

I stayed my final night in Charlotte last night with Lindsey. I got to her house about 9pm and we literally talked all night until after 3:00 in the morning and even though the kids were up bright and early this morning, I was so happy to have had that time with my bestie. We laughed so much and so hard. We both needed a good dose of some solid “girl time” and it was marvelous!

This morning, we put on our “Fight Like a Girl” breast cancer awareness headbands that I got us the other day to show our support. We put on some dress down clothes and headed to the screened in porch with the kiddos for some fun with finger paints. We had planned this activity in advance just for this morning for my blog intention.
What a blast we had! The kids had so much fun and Lindsey and I did too. Feels good to be a big kid sometimes – it’s good for the soul. Anyways, it’s been so long since my kids were this small, I just relish in the days I get to spend with her little love bugs. After painting and their bath I had to head out. I wanted to stop by Brian’s work and hang out with him a little more before I had to get back to the airport.

Saying goodbye is just so hard. However, I choose to smile and be thankful for this awesome, truly perfect 4 days. These are the moments, until next time….#HGAL #loveNC #missingmyoldestandbestiealready

Day 266 – Southern Sunday

Oh how perfectly wonderful this trip has been so far. Today we decided to allow ourselves a slow southern Sunday. This morning Brian and I started our day at Starbucks to eat and get some coffee. We met up with his friends at church and Brian was so happy to show me his new place of worship. Immediately upon being greeted I was so impressed and had the best feeling. The music and services made me even happier with his choice. I was so happy to be a part of that and it started our day off so perfectly.

Afterwards I had to run a couple of errands and then Brian and I went to see a movie (Maze Runner II) - 2 thumbs up btw. Anyhow, what better way to enjoy a southern Sunday than to do some cooking and eating. When we got back, Brian’s friends Drew and Shelby were cooking and just wanted me to relax and enjoy it. I have been so spoiled and celebrated on this trip and I couldn’t be more thankful.
So we are going to eat and relax and enjoy the rest of this blessed day. I hope all of you reading this have had an amazing weekend and an awesome upcoming week. #Cheers #HGAL #dontwantthistriptoend

Day 265 - Queen City

Today was such an awesome day with my oldest son Brian! Today we hung out and just chatted and caught up a bit, went to the mall to do some shopping where we ran into people we knew and just had such a great time. Then he took me out for an amazing lunch. We actually started with a plan of just going to see a movie then to have some of his friends to the house. When we were out and about he got a call from a different friend inviting him to a comedy club in Charlotte. He asked me if I wanted to go and I was like “Definitely, that would make a great intention!”

So we ended up picking up his friend and going into the city. What a great time! From the moment we parked, we ran into a group of his friends. We all hung out for a bit there just talking and enjoying the windy, cool night (so glad it stopped raining). What a great group of people! Then we headed into the comedy club: “Smelly Cat” which ironically enough truly reminded me of the Central Perk from the show Friends. And of course we all remember Phoebe singing Smelly Cat- lol. Anyhow, we listened to a couple of comedians then made our way out and across the street to a venue that was becoming increasingly more crowded.
There was a concert about to happen so Brian bought us tickets and in we went. The vibe was so nice – an eclectic mix of people and a band that was alternative rock and really, really good. We left there and went to a house party for just a bit but had to leave so I could get back to write my blog. It was so cool because Brian made sure to be so conscious of the time so that I could be back to write this. He was telling his friends about my blog and everyone seemed quite intrigued which was cool.

Anyhow, this was simply an amazing day and night with my son but especially nice that we switched up what we were doing for the blog and it ended being a perfectly great time. #Cheers #HGAL #loveCharlottetheQueenCity

Day 264 – Discovery Place

So, I am back in Charlotte!! I came to see my son Brian. Obviously while I’m here I will be spending time with Lindsey and the kids. Since I got in so early this morning and Brian was still at work, Lindsey and I wanted to get together. We went to one of my favorite restaurants, La Patisserie, for lunch and dessert. If this crazy weather wasn’t here (Hurricane Joaquin) oy- we originally were going to go to The Lazy 5 Ranch for my intention. I told Lindsey that I wanted to do something cool with the kids for my blog. She suggested we go to Discovery Place since I have never been there and neither has her youngest, Lilah.

From the second we walked through the door, the kids went nuts! This place is like a kids’ paradise. There are huge butterflies and birds hanging from the ceiling and absolute whimsy everywhere. Then as you go through the two floors there are “pretend” everything. A huge firetruck, ambulance, race car, airplane, a store, art center, pizzeria, farm (we even pretend milked a cow!), theatre (we watched a puppet show that was so cute), bank, garage, construction zone and more.
Although this was geared towards children, Lindsey and I even had a blast (in fact, all the parents appeared to be having a great time).

After we left, we had some girl time and did some shopping which just perfectly wrapped up a truly lovely day. #Cheers #HGAL

Day 263 – Non-Profit Organization

I remain humbled, honored and quite frankly still surprised at the amount of loving and encouraging feedback I have received from family, friends and even perfect strangers regarding this blog. I recently received feedback from a reader suggesting that I begin a Non-Profit Organization. At first I thought what a great idea but then quickly wondered if it would be an unreachable goal because I just don’t know anything about it. Well, I didn’t know anything about blogging until literally the very day I started this one- I researched and started it on the same day and here I am 263 days later.

So I decided that instead of limiting the possibilities of my life and the lives of the people a Non-Profit Organization could benefit, I would begin my research today for my intention. I want to help. I want to give back. I recently have been rallying people around me and prepping for some charitable intentions I have planned in the next few upcoming months. The possibility of having a Non-Profit Organization in honor of Heather to benefit those dealing with Cancer and their families is something I feel is exactly the right thing to do at this juncture in my life.
Upon further research, I did find that it will take quite a bit to get it up and running. But I feel that in the long run it would be worth every single step. Therefore, I choose to proceed. I look forward to the future possibilities….stay tuned. #HGAL #allbecauseofHeather
